Safer Parking Scheme
To combat the significant level of car crime which was taking place in car parks, the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) launched the Safer Parking Scheme in 2004 covering the whole of the UK.
The Scheme sets safety standards
for parking facilities and if, following an assessment by
experienced police officers, the car park operators are judged to
have met those standards then the car park is awarded the Park
Mark™ accreditation.
This accreditation tells people
using a parking facility that they, and their vehicles, will be
safe and that the operator takes that safety seriously. One of the
major benefits for parking providers is that more people are likely
to use a facility with the Park Mark™ accreditation than one
without.
Since the Safer Parking Scheme's
introduction, parking facilities awarded the Park Mark™
accreditation have seen a marked reduction in car crime, some by as
much as 80%.
The Scheme is open to both public
and private sector parking operators and the Development Manager
for Scotland and Northern Ireland, Tom Porter, is based at the
Scottish Business Crime Centre on 07920 816105 or tom.p@britishparking.co.uk
